    I'm sure some historian could set me straight, but I believe up until FDR there wasn't a constitutional mandatory number of Supreme Court justices. I believe he was trying to stack the Supreme Court by adding extra judges to the Court. Fortunately his court packing plan failed.

    Could you imagine serving nearly 37 years as Douglas did? Both of President Bush's nominees are fairly young and could easily serve 20 or more years. In my opinion, the Supreme Court has the most steadying influence on the United States when considering the three branches of government.
